讲座主题：Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Firm Labor Structure
讲座摘要：Using a unique panel data of over 1300 publicly listed companies in China from2007 to 2018, we study how the application of automation technology (e.g. informationtechnology and artificial intelligence) affects a firm’s labor structure (measured by laborforce’s education levels). Furthermore, we compare the effects of AI use on laborstructure and those of the traditional IT use. Our analysis generates three major findings.First, IT and AI lead to larger labor demand increases for jobs requiring lower educationlevels than those requiring higher education levels. Second, AI has a stronger effect onlow-skilled labor in the service sector than in the manufacturing sector, whereas IT hasa stronger effect on low-skilled labor in the manufacturing sector than in the servicesector. These findings contradict the “skill-biased technological change” and U shape“job polarization” effects observed previously and we propos“Technology-enabled deskilling” effect is becoming the major driver for the impact of automation technologylike AI and IT on labor demand as the applications of technologies mature withinnovative services, products and business models. We also find that AI has less positiveeffects on labor demand for workers across all education levels compared to IT, whichmight be attributed to the early stage of AI applications.
