International Economics and Business
Introduction
The major of international economics and business (originally called “industry foreign trade major”) in Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1988, and since then has begun to enroll undergraduate students in industry and foreign trade major. This major is committed to cultivate interdisciplinary talents of foreign trades, with solid natural science foundation, abundant professional knowledge and proficient business skills, good ability to adapt to the international business development. Students are supposed to have solid theoretical foundation, good competence of communication, proficiency in foreign language use, knowledge of basic theoretical outline of this major, and the ability to correlate theory with practice as well as the mastery of operations skills in international trades. Main courses include: macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, international finance, international clearing, international trade principles, international economics, Import & Export Practices, Introduction to Chinese Foreign Trade, international marketing, international business law, accounting, etc. In 2001, it was approved to set up the master station of international trade. In 2005, the first–level discipline master station in applied economics was approved, and was nominated key major for undergraduate students in Heilongjiang Province.
Teaching and Research
The major of international economics and business employs 13 faculty members, amongst whom 5 are doctoral supervisors, 7 are master supervisors; 4 are full professors, 9 are associate professors. About 70 percent of the faculty have experience of overseas studies. With efforts of many years, this major has formulated three main research directions: international trade theory and regulation, international industry transfer and technology transfer, international marketing and customer value assessment.
In the recent five years, faculty of this major have undertaken many national natural science funds projects, national soft science plans and provincial as well as ministerial research projects, achieving a lot of fruitful outcomes; undertaken 43 scientific research projects, including 9 national projects, 22 provincial and ministerial projects, research funds being over 3,200,000 yuan, with an annual average of about 700,000 yuan; and completed 30 scientific research projects, including 4 national projects, 12 provincial and ministerial projects. 4 research achievement awards of provincial (ministerial) level have been presented to faculty of this major. 180 academic papers were published from 2006 to 2010.
International Cooperation and Communication
The major of international economics and business highlights the international cooperation and communication with the well-known universities and institutions. Close academic exchanges and cooperation have been made with the universities such as Russian Novosibirsk state technical university, North Carolina state university in the United States, University of Texas, the University of Incheon in South Korea, etc.
